Rotoroa Island here we come!

Tūrangawaiwai - a place where we feel empowered and connected. At Whangaparāoa College it is important our learners experience this concept fully and what better way than to get amongst our local environment! Read more about how and why this is an essential part of our Year 7 learning pathway by Julia Jarvis (below) and see in the photos how even the weather couldn't dampen the spirits of these keen Year 7 learners.

Our Year 7 classes had a wonderful opportunity to visit Rotoroa Island and explore the concept of Tūrangawaewae as part of our term's topic. Rotoroa Island, being a sanctuary, provided valuable insights into New Zealand's unique biodiversity and the importance of preserving and respecting our whenua.

Tūrangawaewae, (a place to stand) refers to a place where individuals feel a deep connection, a sense of belonging, and a foundation for their identity. Exploring this concept allowed our tamariki to understand the importance of fostering a strong connection with the land and appreciating its cultural and environmental significance.

Learning about why New Zealand is special and gaining an understanding of how to respect and care for the whenua is crucial for fostering environmental leadership and a sense of responsibility toward our unique ecosystems. Trips, like the one to Rotoroa Island, provide our learners with an experience that helps instil a sense of pride and connection to their homeland.
