He Kupenga Rua a Tāne is the name of the bilingual unit here at Whangaparāoa College.

This unit is wānanga based. A wānanga is a safe space, one where decisions and pathways are determined through participation and engagement of all, with heart and head. A Wānanga is a Māori space for learning. It utilises Māori methods of instruction in the hopes to disseminate knowledge.

The purpose of our Wānanga is to seamlessly give parity to Māori knowledge and embody the partnership intended in Te Tiriti o Waitangi by way of education. Learners enrolled within He Kupenga Rua a Tāne now have the space and time to be steeped in Te Ao Māori based education, giving them dual pathway options and opportunities. Our intent is to equip our learners with the skills needed to walk in both worlds - mainstream and Māori. We believe these tools and skills will be taonga (treasure) for our rangatahi (young people) for years to come.

"Ka pu te ruha ka hao te rangatahi" -
"The generation before us is tired but we are fresh”.
