Term 2 Issue 1

Kia ora e te whānau o Whangaparāoa

A belated welcome to the start of term 2. Term 2 is notoriously busy in schools as winter sports begin, school productions occur, and deep, rich learning is completed. As the days become shorter, and temperatures drop, please continue to encourage your learner in every aspect of their schooling.

Earlier today I wrote to you to celebrate our NCEA successes of 2023. Congratulations again to everyone. As we refocus on the class of 2024, we continue to know and grow our learners to achieve their personal excellence.

If you have a learner in Years 9 to 13 who is sitting the upcoming Literacy or Numeracy examinations, you can expect an email with details later this week. The Literacy and Numeracy information can be found here and specific details will be in the respective emails.

To support our learners in Years 10 to 13 with their study habits, we hosted study expert Patrick Sherratt today, to deliver content on how to study, how to utilise time, and how to be best prepared for examinations. All senior learners have access to the study skills booklet that is associated with the presentation, so I encourage you to have a conversation with your learner tonight.

Our Junior School production of ‘A Kidsummer Night’s Dream’ is well underway, with tickets still available but selling fast. I strongly encourage you to purchase tickets and witness the skill and expertise our junior learners have on stage.

In a similar vein, winter sports have begun. A friendly reminder that our learners are participating in school sports, not professional sports, so please support them appropriately and positively.

Thank you, once again, for your ongoing support of our learners and our school.

Year 7 Orienteering Zone Day

Year 7 learners Neve Balmer, Peyton Dugmore, Daisy Law and Madison Ho had a great day at the Orienteering zone day at Monte Cecilia Park.

Orienteering is a sport where a specially drawn map is used to navigate around a course. Learners check in at specific landmarks and race to finish in the fastest time.

The hilly terrain, challenging map and warm weather made for a tiring course. All four learners took on the course with determination, finishing with their own personal best times.

Neve placed first in her grouping with their combined times seeing them finish 11th overall.

A huge thank you to Megan Balmer, Jenna Brown and Davina Dean for getting orienteering off the ground.

Community Weeding Bees

The second of our monthly community weeding bees was very satisfying. We finally started to tackle the big grove of woolly nightshade, privet and moth plants growing above the lovely wetland area. After a couple of hours of mahi, we cut back a significant patch of these noxious weeds, finding many native seedlings in the process that will now have a good chance to grow, flower, fruit and provide a rich habitat for our precious native animals. There is evidence that the threatened ornate skink is present in the wetland area, and an extremely rare bittern bird was spotted a few weeks ago by some college learners. Anything we can do to help these animals is important.

Alumni Success

Congratulations to William Mueggenberg (Head Boy 2023)

Out of 200+ applicants William has been selected for the University of Auckland Formula Student Automotive Engineering (FSAE) team. The selection process involved rigorous applications, interviews, and practical tests in the workshop. William was one of only two candidates with experience in CAD programming and CNC machine operating. He attributes his success to Whangaparāoa College mentors in Calculus, Physics and Materials Technology. The opportunities our school provides have directly prepared him for his position as an FSAE mechanic and later this year William hopes to be competing internationally with other university teams in Germany. He encourages other learners to follow in his footsteps by taking up the challenge to design, build, and compete in the Evolocity project that will lead to a career in Engineering.
