I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of Trustees for the last 5 years, and since March 2011 as the Chairman of the Board. In addition, I am the Chair of the Finance Committee and also serve on the Personnel and Discipline Committees. My daughter Nikolette is currently in year 10 and my son Kristofer graduated from year 13 at the end of 2011.
Whangaparaoa College has transitioned from being a new school to a young school with the unique culture of the College still being embedded. We continue to see an on-going improvement in NCEA achievement at all levels and a heightened reputation throughout our community.
I am passionate about the members of the school community maximising their potential; for some learners this may mean challenging them to pass NCEA with “excellence”; for others it may mean ensuring they pass NCEA with an “achieve”; and for others it may mean opening pathways via the Gateway Programme. Each young person will maximise their “potential” in different ways; as each one is an individual.
Whilst the focus of the Board has to be on Learner Achievement there is also a duty to the staff; both teaching and support staff to assist them in being as effective as possible in their roles. The more effectively the teachers can teach, the more likely it is that our sons and daughters will achieve as well as they are able.
A well-functioning Board is an integral part of ensuring that these on-going developments continue. I believe that the current Board has done an exceptional job working with James and the Senior Learning Team to set in place strategies and goals to ensure we achieve the desired outcomes.
My time on the Board has been hugely rewarding and I would welcome the opportunity to continue to represent our community on the Board of Trustees in 2013 and beyond.
