Prior Scores 5 as WGP score 6
Captain of the WGP 1st 11 Alex Prior scored 5 of his team’s 6 goals in their demolition of Pinehurst in the Preliminary round of the Auckland Schools Cup competition
Whangaparaoa College started the game slowly allowing Pinehurst to make the early running. In fact Pinehurst were unlucky not to take the lead in the early encounters with some early pressure forcing Baden in the WGP goal into action
Whangaparaoa College slowly got themselves into the game as they started to play football although the size of the pitch and the surface did inhibit the open football that the team are trying to play. When WGP did play they opened up Pinehurst and but for some wayward finishing and a great save from the opposition keeper should have taken the lead earlier than they did
Warren Ellis opened the scoring in the game from a free kick that he delivered into the area that avoided everybody , took the keeper by surprise and went in. WGP 1 Pinehurst nil. We continued to play the better football in a scrappy 1st half and went 2 up when Alex Prior got his first of the day. However, Pinehurst did not give up and their tenacity was rewarded on the stroke of half time with a goal that left Baden with no chance. At half time the teams went in WGP 2 Pinehurst 1
The second half started with Whangaparaoa College playing very attractive football retaining possession well but unfortunately allowed Pinehurst to pull another back from a cross. This spurred the College team on who then started a demolition of the Pinehurst side. Whangaparaoa College launched numerous attacks and retained possession well, although there was still some poor decision making around the short passing game, but they overall showed they were a class above the opposition.
Alex’s 5 goals were a demonstration in quality finished utilizing not only his feet to score but also cunning use of the eyebrow and knee. The team finished the game strongly with a high quality performance
