French is taught from year 8 to 11 at Whangaparaoa College. The aim is to teach the learners to be communicative in every day situations. The four skills focussed on at each year level are listening, reading, writing and speaking. By years 10 - 11 learners the aim is to have learners capable of holding basic conversations in French.
Another important focus in language learning is the cultural experience. learners are given the opportunity to experience french cuisine, french films, and of course the language.
In December 2005 we took a group of year 9 learners to New Caledonia. We are currently organising a trip for 2007. This provides a great opportunity for students to experience French language and culture first hand.
We have also begun teaching German at year 9 level, with the same language and cultural focuses as in French.
