Gateway started with 24 pilot schools in 2001. In 2003 the Government extended the programme to all decile 1- 5 schools with full implementation to be achieved by 2007 by all schools in New Zealand.

The Programme offers structured workplace learning to Senior Learners in all schools
The Programme assists schools to make learning relevant and to broaden student’s options by offering a mixture of traditional and workplace learning
The Programme strengthens links between schools and businesses
Learner work experience offers Employers the benefit of enhanced staff recruitment and selection

Up to 40 Placements available in 2010 for senior learners
Enrolment Criteria
Selection by interview
Run in classes as an option line
Core Generic / Industry Unit Standards
Learners in workplace learning one day per week from terms two and three
Credits count towards NCEA Record of Learning
Learners will gain workplace Unit Standards and be assessed by a qualified assessor.
Learners will work to a theory based Learning Plan linked to their practical work place experience.
Work placements are to be sourced by learners as part of their work ready development.
