Help you son / daughter to gather current study, training and work information through the Government funded career information website: www.careers.govt.nz

Identify career options that fit with your child’s interests, skills and dreams and take into account levels of academic achievement. Then weigh up the pros and cons: is a gap year, a job, an apprenticeship, training or further study the best choice?
Choose suitable career options and narrow down a list of two or three for further exploration. Plan the steps that need to be taken to realize these chosen careers. Including a back up plan is wise in case the first choice doesn’t eventuate.
It is sensible to refine and modify choices as your daughter progresses through school, study and work. Keep the career plan under review.
As a parent your role as a support person is vital- ask, discuss and promote your daughters career ideas.
Talk to Teachers, Deans and Careers staff to help identify appropriate subjects and career suggestions for your son/daughter.

The most important factor for Young People to consider when preparing for their ‘’next step’’ is that whatever it is they choose to do, it will be a good fit and a realistic choice for them. As a parent/caregiver, you are in an ideal position to help your son/daughter to find the best ‘’fit by:
.    providing support and encouragement.
.    keeping a positive attitude.
.    having patience and trusting that they can make a good decision.
.    encouraging and helping them to be proactive in research.
.    encouraging involvement in a variety of activities in and outside of school.
