Science and Technology Building

Planning has commenced on the final phase of the College’s ambitious development project. In addition to providing a significant component of new purpose-built learning accommodation, the final phase of work will include new construction to alter the existing school entrance. The new entry arrangement will clearly communicate the vision of “being a lead school in learning” to the wider community and give Whangaparaoa College the presence that it deserves.

The programme covers the full design and construction of an additional 12 room year 7/8 classroom block to enable the school to occupy this in February 2008.

The Science and Technology building (above), which opened in February, is a magnificent building incorporating the latest in building design and development. As well there are innovative and exciting technological developments in this building which are very exciting.

The Performing Arts Centre

The Performing Arts Centre is a creative, modern, stunning building with a practical construction. The building is a focus at the centre of the school and the curved elliptical auditorium with its inclined walls always raises comment on first entering. The building concrete structure, as well as being extremely practical, is also visually striking and adds to the modern impression which the school has attempted to bring to this design.

The sloping walls and the design of the seating area give the audience a feeling of being totally involved and immersed in the performance. It is effective and innovative how the drama and music rooms fan off the theatre. The structure commands a presence from anyone entering it and the feedback from the public has been impressive.

New J Block - opened in March 2007

Another new building (J Block - Year 7 & 8) was handed over to the Whangaparaoa College in March 2007 making  the second this year and the fourth in a series of new facilities built since the College was opened in 2005.

The addition of the new building to the College will further extend our ability to offer the best educational facilities in New Zealand.

It consists of 12 classrooms, a learner’s commons, a library and staffroom and incorporates the latest design concepts for modern learning, which include interactive whiteboards and a wireless network link to use with lap tops.

With extensive glass windows the rooms have lots of light with external entry for
learners.

The building was designed to fit in with the overall design of the previous new
buildings and will provide a much improved learner access throughout the College.

An open day is being planned for later in the year which will give Whangaparaoa
residents the opportunity to inspect the new facilities and view plans for the further
development of the College.
