This is my second term on the Board of Trustees. I have lived and taught on the coast since 1993.
My background is in education, social work and rehabilitation. In addition I have had roles in Youth Leadership Training, Victim Support and as a Diversion Panel Member for the Safer Community Council/Justice Dept.
Currently I am director of a Homebased Childcare organisation and a Parenting Coach providing strategies for parents seeking harmonious homes and more enjoyable parenting.
I have built my family around foster and step-children and am once again in the world of teenagers as I raise a grandchild.
My particular drive is in supporting those children who are not naturally academic and who have special learning needs or experience additional barriers to learning. I believe there are other markers of success besides ‘test scores’ and these also deserve to be nurtured, developed and celebrated. I feel the college has a responsibility to assist all children to reach their potential to become ‘outstanding individuals’. However, I also believe every learner is responsible for their own behaviour and should this interfere with the rights of others to learn, to feel safe or with the ability of teachers to teach, then that individual must be held accountable and be assisted toward change. Good behaviour is not reliant on academic ability.
I am committed to supporting teachers and management to accomplish this and to provide a place where our children feel safe, supported and valued so learning and achievement can be enjoyed by all. I would like to see Whangaparaoa College become a school of excellence in the holistic sense of excellence, thereby attracting all local children and only the very best of teachers.
